Year 15 Recap: A Season of Shadows and Silver Reels
October, that faithful friend of chills and candlelight, has come and gone once more, leaving its familiar perfume of smoke and memory in the air. For most, it is a month of costumes, cider, and bonfires. But for one man, it is something far more sacred.

Spirit Halloween: The Movie
I have only missed one year of trick-or-treating with Lincoln, and it was horrible. It was his second year, and he had the most adorable Wolfman costume. Plus, he had just started walking a couple of months ago, and babies when they just learn to walk are adorable. After that, I told myself I wasn't going to miss another one because it was only a matter of time before they'd rather be with their friends. Because today is Halloween, and I had time to watch a movie with Dear, w

John Carpenter's Vampires
The movie starts with Jack Crow and his band of vampire hunters in a small New Mexico town. They clear out an abandoned home full of vampires in a very business-like manner, showing they're very good at what they do. The problem is, while they killed a bunch, they couldn't find the "Master Vampire."

Weapons
Weapons is not on the level of movies like Terrified, The Dark and the Wicked or Host, but it's pretty damn scary. The movie begins with a child narrating that a bunch of kids in one single class all went missing at 2:17 AM. They weren't kidnapped; they all just got out of bed, walked out the door, and Naruto ran down the street.

M3GAN
The movie starts with a young girl Cady, and we get front row seats to how she loses her parents. After a devastating car crash, she's then sent off to live with her Aunt Gemma. Gemma works for a toy company, and she's working on something in secret without her boss's knowledge.

KPop Demon Hunters
A trio of KPop stars in the group HUNTR/X are more than what they appear. They're actually a part of an ancient line of warriors that fight demons. On top of their magical weapons, they have a magic voice that helps them in their fight to seal off their city from the encroaching demons.

In Fear
A couple, Tom and Lucy, had just started dating two weeks ago, and she agreed to go with him to a music festival in Ireland. The movie actually starts with a shot of the countryside while his voicemail plays in the background. He tells her to invite her friends, and they'll all go camping.

Eloise
The movie opens with pictures and news reports of the fire that destroyed the Eloise Asylum back in 1982. As I was watching this, my first thought was, "Wow, this guy has a really good reporter's voice." Turns out, these were real pictures, videos and news reports from when the actual Eloise Asylum burnt to the ground.

Special Report: Zombie Invasion
The bonus video is of what appears to be a small to mid-size TV station covering the zombie outbreak from the beginning to where it's gotten completely out of control. We have an anchor sitting at a desk covering the latest in the breaking situation. He tosses to different live shots, he gets new information handed to him, he has a producer in his ear and at several points he has to fill the air after every live shot that usually ends badly.

Disturbia
I think I've told you this story before, but this movie had one of my favorite movie theater watching stories because it illustrates just how fun it is watching a horror movie with a crowd. It was opening weekend for this movie, and in case you do not go to the movies, opening night for horror is usually insanely packed and rowdy.

The Woman in the Yard
We meet a grieving mother who is not taking the loss of her husband very well. You don't know how he died at first, but she's hobbled in crutches throughout the movie, so you can guess pretty easily that it was a car crash. She's doing her best to put on a brave face for her two kids, but it's eating away at her.

The People Under the Stairs
I'm going to be honest with you, I had never seen this movie before, but I was aware of it at a young age. I think the first time I ever encountered it, it was playing while I was waiting in line for a haunted house. I don't remember the scene, but the little I saw affected me. Along with the title and the poster, it made me hesitant to watch it. The idea of the movie scared me as a kid, and I could never bring myself to sit through it.

Brightburn
The movie can be summed up in one sentence: "What if Superman were evil?" As an aside, the most unrealistic thing about the Superman comics is that in some origin stories, he has his powers as a toddler. There is absolutely no way a toddler would be able to control ultimate power like that. Every time he gets mad or excited, there would be a pile of bodies in his wake. President Baby is the sweetest boy in the world, but toddlers are not rational!

Demonic
Sometimes I wonder which is worse: to be a fan of a team that is consistently good but always lets you down, or to be a fan of a team that is consistently bad. I'm a Notre Dame fan, and under Brian Kelly, they were always good enough to beat bad-to-OK teams, but would lose to good teams. Marcus Freeman has provided a lot more hope, and with that, has come bigger heartbreak. Contrast that with, let's say, the Cleveland Browns, who seem to be destined to the basement of the sta

Vivarium
The movie opens with a teacher, Gemma, doing a fun little exercise with her class of what seemed like 2nd graders. Once class gets out, one of the students notices several baby birds on the ground, dead. Gemma believes it's the work of a cuckoo engaging in what's called brood parasitism.

When Evil Lurks
This movie isn't one where I can give you a more detailed synopsis; it's best to keep this one generic. Summed up, two brothers come across what's called a "rotten." It's a person possessed by a demon. It's pretty destructive in that state, but if you kill it, especially by using a gun, you will release it into the world, and things will get very bad.

War of the Worlds
Ice Cube works for the DHS, and they're tracking this hacker who is threatening to expose what he calls the "Goliath Program," which is a new way for the government to completely spy on everybody; think Big Brother (the book, not the show. As an aside, Keanu carried that season, and he should have won.) While they're trying to track down "The Disruptor," meteors start hitting all over the earth at once. Inside those meteors are giant tripods armed with lasers and murder on th

Dagon
Much like Cthulhu from earlier this month, it takes the name of a monster from an H.P. Lovecraft story and just does a live-action remake of Shadow Over Innsmouth. This, however, is a much more faithful adaptation and is a lot better.

The Colony
So we open up to a snowy wasteland in 2045. The world has been covered in a state of perpetual deep, deep snow. It's been snowing for a long time, and the surviving members of humanity are hunkered down in underground bunkers. It is similar to George Romero's underrated Day of the Dead, but instead of zombies, think a shit ton of snow.

Cube
The movie opens with Death from "Supernatural" waking up inside a weird room with doors on the sides, the floor and the ceiling. Not exactly sure of what he's doing, he picks a door at random and crawls through, only to trigger a trap that gives him a pretty gruesome death. Outside of the Wrong Turn series, things don't tend to go well for that actor in movies or TV shows.
