Biohazard

I'm not the biggest fan of NFL games across the pond. It sounds cool on paper, but from what I've read from the players, they don't like it. One of the reasons is all the travel that eats into bye weeks when players should be resting and healing. I don't know how much the sport is growing in Europe, but it'll never fully grow because the game-day experience is very different there than it is here. If you want to grow fans, they have to do the whole nine yards, getting there 8 hours before the game, drinking and grilling meat. It's like pitching a new idea to a boardroom, but leaving out some of the best parts. I will say, if somehow American football ends up in the Olympics, it'll all be worth it. In any case, here are my thoughts on...

Biohazard (2026)

If you ever wondered what Chandler Riggs, Carl (Coral) from "The Walking Dead," is up to, apparently it's making a short Resident Evil 7 film. Before I get into the movie itself, let me say that Riggs got a raw deal. For starters, killing Coral didn't make much narrative sense, especially because the guy who got Carl killed died a short time later, so what's the point? And on a professional level, his family had just bought a house in Atlanta to be closer to production, and then he got killed off. Lastly, shortly after they killed him, Andrew Lincoln tells production, "Lol, I'm leaving." I wasn't the biggest fan of Carl, especially in the earlier seasons, but he had room to grow, and it stinks what they did to him.

A disgusting dinner with the Bakers.

The short film plops you right in the middle of Ethan's dealings with the Baker family. The movie sits you down right in the middle of that disturbing dinner from the video game, complete with limbs being chopped off and knives in the mouth. There's really no context to this at all. We just get dumped right into it. For anyone who has never played the game, prepare to be confused as hell as to why these Cajun folk are so desperate for this guy to eat all the rotted meat and why a man was able to fix a chopped-off hand by dumping some liquid on it. I knew exactly what was happening, because I had played the game, but if I had come in fresh, I would have had no idea what the hell was going on.

A cryptic phone call.

But that's the point, isn't it? Biohazard is a short film made by Resident Evil fans, for Resident Evil fans. With that in mind, I'm going to judge it based on that, because as the movie goes on, it gets more insane. Then, when we get past the garage boss fight, we get a cryptic phone call that leaves Ethan confused but gives some hope for answers in the future, and then the credits roll; we're done here.

I'm intrigued if he plans on making more. It's pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the video game, which is both good and bad. It's good because when you go too far off-script, like Return to Silent Hill, it can end up being really shitty. But if you're doing the same thing that's already been done, like the Psycho remake, what's the point? You can always just watch or play the original. But I view this as more of Chandler Riggs, or the production team, essentially showing what they're capable of, or potentially angling for a spot in any future RE projects. Whatever the goal was, I have to give them credit. It looked very good. With all the Jason fan films I've seen, the quality varies, but in this one, everything looks surprisingly good. While it doesn't break any new ground, it does capture the feel of the game beautifully.

This is also the first thing I've ever seen Chandler Riggs in that wasn't "The Walking Dead," and he did well in it. Normally, when an actor has a famous role, it can be difficult seeing them as someone else. Sean Bean is an incredible actor, but to me, he is, and forever will be, Boromir. To Riggs' credit, I didn't see Carl at all. I think it's partly because Ethan is very different than Carl. Negan was right when he said Carl was a future serial killer. The dude did turn into a killing machine near the end. Ethan, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. He's confused, terrified and gets manhandled by every Baker he comes across. I don't know if Riggs can carry a whole movie, but I'm a lot more confident in his ability after watching Biohazard than I was before.

It's entertaining and worth a watch if you've played the game, and if you're curious about the bat shit insanity of the early moments of Resident Evil 7. It's also only 20 minutes long, so even if you end up hating it, you won't be investing too much of your time watching.
